S.T.A.L.K.E.R

What is it? S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has been in the development stages for over three years now and is apparently not due out until next year. Despite the large number of set backs the game has endured, fans and industry insiders have remained excited about the project, so something special must be going on - right? The game is set in 2012 and you take the role of a mercenary, tasked with the job of entering the Chernobyl exclusion zone, post nuclear holocaust. Inside the area are lots of horrible nasties which, being the trained killer that you are, you must go about dispatching. The developers hope for a kind of mix between RPG and FPS - whether that will actually work, we will have to wait and see.

Why we're excited: Apparenlty the game is being realeased as a part of a double pack with Duke Nukem Forever Whenever... Nah, just kidding. The idea behind Stalker is enough to get anyone excited, the free form gameplay proposition with RPG elements in a post nuclear holocaust environment is enough to get even an anti-nuclear activist excited. Judging from the screenshots, it looks like the game hasn't slipped back as far as some expected, at least from a graphical point of view. Sure, it isn't going to be challenging the next Unreal game graphically, but it still looks pretty darn sharp.
